High speed carpet with Antron® carpet fibre

United Kingdom, 1 May 2008 – Along with Vorwerk Teppichwerke, Antron® carpet fibre from INVISTA ensured that carpet will travel up to 140mph onboard 29 Hitachi Class 395 trains.

Forming the Channel Tunnel Rail Link between London St Pancras and Ashford, Kent rail stations, these dual voltage trains are being installed with a bespoke cut-pile carpet in Vorwerk's Varia Design Train product that uses Antron® carpet fibre.

Specified by Atlantic Design Transportation with a design by Brand Environment (UK), Varia Design Train will feature on all seated passenger areas when the trains become operation in December of 2009.

Charles Greenway, Atlantic Design Transportation, comments:

"With Varia Design Train already used by German rail companies and with its design freedom thanks to printing technology, we were keen to ensure its suitability for the UK and so examined it to make sure it would meet with UK regulations. It succeeded all the necessary requirements. The carpet also gave us the opportunity to provide the new trains with a product that not only retained its appearance, thanks to its cut-pile construction and use of Antron® carpet fibre, but also the ability to be easily cleaned."

With limited opportunity to carry out cleaning onboard the trains, Antron® carpet fibre's trilobal cross-section helps to minimise the appearance of soiling and provides the ideal solution for the carriages. Paired with the bespoke two tone grey design that helps to reduce the appearance of dirt even further and reflects the operator's corporate identity, and aided by its tighter molecular structure that resists crushing and matting, Antron® carpet fibre keeps Varia Design Train looking good for longer.

In order to facilitate simple installation, Varia Design Train is equipped with Texback® Spezial backing. This backing forms part of the ecofix® hook and loop fitting system that negates the use of adhesive, meaning a rapid and emissions free installation and ease of lifting for underfloor access.

Ian Hammond, Vorwerk Teppichwerke comments:

"Our Varia Design Train product has been created to meet very specific requirements. By selecting Antron® carpet fibre we were able to utilise the tighter molecular structure of type 6.6 nylon to improve durability and its unique trilobal cross section also gives the carpet the ability to minimise the appearance of soiling - vital when cleaning has to fit in around operating timetables."
