Velvet carpet

Woven carpet made on a loom similar to a Wilton loom but lacking the jacquard mechanism. Velvet carpets are generally level loop, level cut/loop or plush, in solid or tweed colours.

Vettermann drum test

An instrument to test pile floor coverings to produce changes in appearance and colour due to changes in surface structure by mechanical action. This accelerated test, primarily used in the US, provides a specific rating of the ability of the carpet to withstand crushing and matting.

Vinyl

Colloquial term for the synthetic polymer, polyvinyl chloride. Also called PVC. PVC is used as a carpet back-coating for carpet tiles and 6' goods. Vinyl foams have been used as attached cushions. Many walk-off mats have solid sheet vinyl backing.
